A rich velvet sky reflected onto the light waters of the Silvan coast. For once the coast houses were quiet, and only a few held the warm glow of candlelight. Today was supposed to be an "unlucky day" in this region of Silva. Even the elves stopped partying and only went about their jobs that day. The sea was supposed to be cursed this day. No one knew exactly where the rumour had started. In truth, it had only been a playful trick one of the trickster water mer had played on Klecheck, but the elves were easily fed with fables and stories.
Under water it was a different story. The water rippled with life and the bubbling sound of laughter rang at every corner. The mer were reaching up higher in the water today, because of the lack of people they saw tonight. For once, nearly all the fully grown mer women were present, because no man would be lured to the coast at night today. Junhere reached out her fingers to brush the sea kelp, laughing in delight as a dolphin tickled her green-blue hair. All the water folk were laughing today, except the ones that were always somber and empty of laughter.

Farain had been annoyed for nearly a minute at the elves. They were scared of Klecheck, for some reason, and hadn't been partying like usual. So the only natural thing to do was pester the guilty party, who were having a party. A party having a party. Heh. So clever...
Farain shifted into mer form 3, male, slightly bluish, the pinnacle of merfection (he was on a roll!) with his large blue-green ears and flamboyant gill strips. Admittedly, he looked a bit out of place in the near-shore boonies instead of in the large mer-cities, but he didn't care.
With a flick of his tail, he glided over to a young mermaid. "Hello there!" he said brightly.

Myrrh giggled sweetly, flicking her curly dark-blue hair as the handsome merman spoke to her. "Hello!" she cooed,"I don't think I've seen you before," she said observing the figure. He didn't look much like the other mermen drifting around to try and coax the mermaids. He looked important, like the traders that occasionally came to the coast town of Tchik. Well, she better count herself lucky then. It wasn't every day she even saw a decent-looking merman, much less this handsome figure who had seemingly appeared by magic.
"Don't you think today is just lovely? Of course, all the elves aren't here," she sighed. This year was her first being counted as a "true" maiden. The little maidens were always herded in before sunset. Their tail fins were not strong enough to make a quick getaway and they weren't developed enough in general to perform the activities on the coast. So far Myrrh hadn't ventured to the coast at night, although she had wanted to for years. She remembered Tei, and Koa, all leaving for their first nights. They were supposed to slip away, but both had bragged.

"I'm not from around here," said Farain in a tone of voice that suggested he was from some place far more mysterious and... Attractive. He was, in fact, suggesting the truth, oddly enough. Just not what this mermaid would think. It was debatable whether this would help him or not, but it didn't matter.
After all, the difference in winning by fifty and by fifty-one is hardly a difference.
"Though yes, it is a most lovely day. But not as lovely as you." He kissed her hand, knowing that the strange gesture tended to fluster and confuse the merpeople. "Or evening, rather," he corrected himself, glancing up at the sunset sky. "Either way, of course, you're much more attractive. I'd never wish to kiss a sunset -- oh my." He placed his hand over his mouth as if he had said something he hadn't meant to.
Not that you believe that was an accident. That would be remarkably stupid of you.

"Really?" she asked dreamily, wondering what sorts of places this merman must have seen. The mermaids of Tchik didn't go far away from home. Myrrh herself had never ventured as far as the tide-turning place. She had always been able to see the bright splash of the Silvan coral reef, no matter where she had chosen to play. There were traveling mer of course. The trader groups. Myrrh had seen a merwoman once, adorned in trader's garb and surrounded with several young ones.
She let in a sharp breath when the merman kissed her fingers. It was strange feeling that went over them, like the soft tickle of the seaweed, but more gentle. "Oh, I don't believe anyone could kiss the sunset. Especially one of the merfolk. If anyone did kiss it, they would have to be a god or goddess." Myrrh was starting to lose control of this conversation, and she felt herself slipping into this foreign merman's charm.

"Really? I suppose you're right... Only a god could kiss the sunset. But then, no god would want to that, would he or she?" He was, of course, babbling. It would be pointless to say things that meant anything while carefully shifting the scene around them so they were a bit further down the coast, where a considerably smaller number of merfolk were drifting about.
Farain moved his slightly piscatorial body closer and grabbed her wrists. Music swayed out of nowhere, and he pulled her into a classic merdance.

"Oh I suppose," she answered feeling herself slowly melting away form the main stream of merfolk. She didn't fight it however. What a handsome merman, and on such a beautiful night. She would certainly have something to speak of tomorrow morning. She no longer felt the currents in full strength behind her. They had swam to a place quieter. She did not recall moving, but many said that this night held magic of its own sorts.
She felt the music gently start and the merman guiding her in this old merdance. He couldn't recall the story for this one. Tchik loved dancing and its mothers taught the mermaids the steps, the history, the occasion for every dance they had done as a young one. This one was old, so that no one could remember precisely when people started dancing it. But nonetheless it was a calm, gentle, song that stirred sub-conscious memories in every mer.

The music and the dance were nice, Farain thought, but rather boring. All the smooth flowing music did was make them sway in a slightly fancy fashion. He decided that it was time for some more aphrodisiac music.
The sound shifted, and the second dance began. It was faster, and had an odd off-beat beat. Unlike the classic stlyle of the previous piece, this one didn't suggest that dance would be nice. It demanded it. It told you that if you didn't contort your body into weird positions, you were spoiling the whole mood of the party. It grabbed you by the fins and twirled you around like a frenetic ballerina.
It's name translated to The Dance of Flames, and it was the Pyrian dynasties answer to mermusic. Farain slipped into it with ease, but the nearby mer tended to look completely confused.

Myrrh became alarmed as the song changed from a slow rhythmic waltz to some crazy twisting dance she couldn't keep up with. She'd never learned this song. And that was saying a lot, since her mother and grandmother were the "dance mothers" of Tchik. One of her sisters would inherit the job when grandmother passed away, and Myrrh had paid close attention to try and grab the spot. She'd never heard this, never heard any sort of dance that was like this. It made her insecure and even while she moved forcefully to teh dance, she was no longer enjoying it.
"Tmir? Tmir?" she asked calling out to one of her friend musicians who were supposed to be playing today. She slowed as the dance ended with one huge "bang" and turned to search for her friend. The strange thing was, she didn't see any musicians around here. The music had been soft and drifting before, but then it had turned loud and blaring. It couldn't have possibly been that loud unless they were within sight range. Perhaps today really was filled with mysteries.

Look at me, demanded Farain in a mental command.
The music shifted. Flame Dancing wasn't as aphrodisiac as he'd hoped. Time for music that was soft and melodious. Aquarian violins mingled with classic mer-instruments to produce a lovely base for a fluting melody. The dance for this was much easier, and involved more twirling around in circles than most.
"Isn't the music nice?" he asked, giving her a hypnotizing stare. This was beginning to be a bit slow for his tastes...

Myrrh's gaze shifted back to the handsome merman, taking on a slightly glazed appearance as she fell into the dance. She had a subconscious feeling that the dances were ending now, and that it was time for the festivities in Tchik. Yet she didn't want to pull away, and she didn't seem to be able to do so either. She sighed, feeling the now-colder water gently part as her tail gently cut through it. Her gray eyes caught sight of three other couples leaving the reefs now. Why were they leaving? The dance music always stopped before the festival began in town.
"Yes, its lovely. Such a nice melody...," she said dreamily, her body moving automatically into the second movement of the song, the adagio movement, which involved more twirling and even slower tempo.
