A Tsukuomi is basically an object that has reached their 200th 'birthday' and has gain sentience. They can be anything from sandles to swords. However, only objects made in Silva or have spent a long time in it are capable of becoming Tsukuomi.
However, most Tsukuomis cannot take on a humanoid form unless a suitably powerful mage performs certain spells on them. This is the reason most Tsukuomis are familiars or assisstants. If the mage that gave them a humanoid form dies, the Tsukuomi is instantly reverted back to its original form. Which is why Tsukuomi that wish to keep their humanoid form tend to try stick close to the mage that 'freed' them.
Humanoid forms of Tsukuomis can vary drastically. Some can merely appear as plain humans, whereas others can take the form of grotesque monsters.
The magical powers of Tsukuomis grow as they age. However, they never amount to anything much except for shooting bolts of destructive...things, or a weak shield.
Tsukuomis that reach their 500th birthday can revert to human form at will, without the need for a mage to help. These are mostly curious wanderers that try to understand the ways humans think and act, and mostly never mean any harm. However, certain Tsukuomis (particularly those that were toys before) like to play pranks.
There is no real way to identify a Tsukuomi, and neither is there a way of really killing them. The most one could hope for is cutting appendages off, forcing a Tsukuomi to be hurt enough to revert back to its original form for a time as it tries figure out a way to get past the damage to the human form.
Of course, chucking one into a fire should work. However, since there are no documented cases of Tsukuomi killings, little information is to be had.
